How Onlays can Help Restore and Preserve Tooth Structure
Onlays are used to restore a decayed or damaged tooth to its original condition.
Dental onlays (and inlays) can actually strengthen your tooth and are considered a conservative approach to restorative dental procedures since it doesn’t involve any removal of healthy tooth structure like a
dental crown may.
What is an Onlay?Onlays are a great dental prosthetic that helps restore and preserve tooth structure. They are fabricated in a laboratory and fit inside and over a tooth, similar to a piece in a jigsaw puzzle, fitting snugly in all the right grooves and crevices. Dentists call onlays an “indirect filling” because they are not molded into place during your visit with the dentist; it is pre-formed in a lab. That is why this type of
restorative dental procedure takes at least two appointments.
Benefits of Dental OnlaysDental onlays can close spaces between teeth where food gets stuck. They also provide other great benefits when looking for a restorative option, including:
- Dental onlays can restore a brighter smile to mouths that have several amalgam fillings
- Dental onlays do not get cavities
- More of the natural tooth is preserved with a dental onlay
- Precise construction protects tooth from damage and infection
Onlays won’t work for every restorative need. They only cover a small portion of the tooth. If your dental needs require a large prosthetic for restorative purposes, a crown may be better suited for you.
