Tooth crowns are a very common dental restoration performed daily in dental offices. A crown could be needed for any number of reasons. At some point, almost everyone will need a filling or a crown.
You may have chipped a tooth during an accident or eating something hard. You could suffer from a disease that requires medication that harms your teeth, or you could just have developed gum disease or tooth decay. Even the strictest oral hygiene routine may not prevent needing a crown.
Regardless of the reason for needing a crown, you can relax and know the procedure of attaching a crown is quick and only requires two visits to your dentist. The procedure is painless, and there is little recovery time.
Once you have your crown in place, you can enjoy the relief of knowing you took care of your oral health and will start to see the benefits.
Holding damaged teeth together
A crown is used to hold damaged or cracked teeth together. A crown can be made from porcelain, metal, resin, or ceramics. It is made to match a natural tooth as close as possible.
The crown is placed over the damaged tooth after the tooth is filled and repaired properly to prevent further damage. The crown is cemented and will be sturdy and feel like your natural tooth.
Relieve discomfort
Dental crowns were created to help relieve the pain and discomfort associated with a damaged or cracked tooth. Once the crown is in place, you will no longer have to worry about the sensitivity before the procedure.
The only trouble you will have with a crown is the day or so following the procedure. As with all dental treatments, there will be some swelling. However, it can be relieved with an over-the-counter pain reliever.
Your dentist will give you aftercare instructions to help you through the first 24 hours after your crown is put in place.
Simple procedure
When your dentist breaks the news that you will need a crown, don't be discouraged or worried. A crown is a simple procedure. It is a type of restorative dentistry that will benefit you in the long run.
During the first visit, your dentist will numb the area and prepare the tooth for the crown. They will remove all the decay and portions of the enamel that is needed to be removed so the crown will fit securely when placed. Your dentist will fit in a temporary crown that will remain until you receive your permanent crown.
Your tooth needs time to heal from clearing out the decay, and that is why the second visit will be about two weeks later. It is during this visit that the dentist will secure your permanent crown.
From the first visit to the last, the entire procedure should be virtually painless. Be sure to let your dentist know if you are experiencing discomfort at any time.
Last for years
A dental crown will last for many years. If you take care of your mouth and follow a proper oral hygiene routine, you should not have any issues with your crown.
It is recommended that you try to avoid biting into very hard foods and sticky candy, but I think any dentist would agree with this rule even if you do not have a crown in place.
You can care for your crown just like you would for any of your natural teeth. You can brush, floss, and use mouthwash without worrying.
The simple decision of getting a crown will be well worth your while. If your dentist does suggest having a crown placed on your damaged tooth, there is no reason you should not take their recommendation.
Will my insurance cover a crown?
As with any dental restoration procedure, you can ask your dentist's office to contact your insurance company and find out if you will be left with any out-of-pocket expenses.
If you are required to pay any costs out of your pocket, you should be able to set up a payment arrangement with your dentist's office staff.
