5 Important Facts About Dental Veneers

Considering getting a dental veneer? Is your smile as bright as you wish it was? Well, you are on the right track. While regular brushing and flossing can help brighten up that smile, they most likely will not restore your teeth to their former glory.

Dental veneers are the perfect way to restore teeth and get those pearly whites to stand out. But before heading out to the dentist, check out these five facts about dental veneers:

Five important fact about veneers

1. There are two types of dental veneers

When getting a veneer, the patient must choose between either porcelain or composite. Both of these have their share of advantages and disadvantages. Composite veneers tend to cost much less than porcelain veneers, and while the price of the veneer may vary depending on various factors, porcelain veneers on average cost twice the amount of composite veneers.

Possibly the biggest advantage of composite veneers is that its application does not alter the shape of your teeth as much as the porcelain process does, hence composite veneers may be removed and replaced as needed. Porcelain veneers, on the other hand, are much more durable than their composite counterparts, having an average lifespan of 10-15 years compared to the seven- to nine-year lifespan of composites. Most dentists also agree that porcelain veneers appear more natural than the composites.

2. They lessen tooth sensitivity

Aside from making teeth appear brighter, dental veneers also reduce tooth sensitivity and increase the overall strength of the tooth. The reduced sensitivity is caused by the dental veneer covering the front layer of the tooth and serving as a barrier against drinks and foods that trigger sensitivity.

3. A painless procedure

While there may be slight discomfort when getting veneers, as a small portion of enamel is removed from the teeth that will be restored, the prosthetics themselves do not cause any pain. Local anesthesia may be applied depending on the patient's pain tolerance.

4. They fight cavities

Cavities and various other oral diseases are caused by leftover food particles in the mouth that are converted into acids by the bacteria that live in the mouth. Dental veneers serve as a barrier between teeth and the acids created by these bacteria, preventing decay.

5. Veneers fix various issues

Aside from fighting cavities and brightening up a person's smile, veneers can also fix various other oral issues. It can be used to restore discolored teeth or cover up chipped or crooked teeth. Even slightly misaligned and uneven teeth can be addressed with dental veneers. Gaps between teeth can also be corrected by dental veneers.

Getting veneers has a number of advantages, and the process is completely safe, painless and harmless. Having these prosthetics brightens up your smile and improves your confidence. Book a consultation with one of our dentists to learn more about how veneers can be used to restore your smile.
