When a person has lost one or multiple of their teeth, restoring them and finding a replacement solution, like dental implants, can seem daunting. However, with recent advancements in dental technology, there are many options for people.

Having implants inserted to replace missing teeth or multiple teeth has become a common practice that dentists use to help correct the issue of missing teeth.

Information about dental implants

The dental implant treatment is straight forward in what all needs to be checked and completed before having the implant procedure begin. Because the process takes between two to three visits to the dentist, it is important that certain things are checked beforehand to ensure no surprises.

How do dental implants work?

Although it may seem intricate, and it is, the steps to obtain and have dental implants installed is straight forward.

  • After a dentist inspects where a tooth used to be it will be determined if implants are a good choice
  • If they are, the dentist will have the patient go to a specialist. The specialist will inspect the patient and give the all-clear indicating that the jawbone is healthy enough for implants. If not, then bone grafting might need to be completed before implants are placed
  • The next part is having the implant inserted and fastened into the jawbone. This is done by fastening a dental crown on the top of the abutment
  • After the crown is fastened securely, the dentist will inspect and determine whether the implant process is completed

If everything worked properly, then the patient can experience the difference of replacing an empty space from a missing tooth with a dental implant that feels identical to a natural tooth.

Make sure the jawbone is inspected before implants

One aspect that dentists and dental professionals know in great detail is the importance of having the jawbone in good condition for the dental implants to not be rejected by the bone. If the jawbone is said to not be strong enough for dental implants, then it is typically recommended that bone grafting is done.

What is bone grafting?

By taking small parts of synthetic bones, a bone graft uses these materials to strengthen the jawbone. Once the bone grafting is cleared as being secure, then the jawbone will be healthy and strong enough to have dental implants inserted and used for replacing a patient's teeth.

One of the most important things to remember is that the bone grafting procedure is rarely considered uncomfortable for the patient. If it is ever uncomfortable, then it is only for the most severe cases of atrophy in the jaw.
