Gum Disease: 5 Tips to Avoid Periodontal Surgery

Looking for some tips so you can avoid periodontal surgery? Good idea. More commonly known as gum surgery, this type of surgery is often performed on those who have been diagnosed with a gum disease, like gingivitis or periodontitis. Ongoing mouth problems will eventually lead to a loss of bone and tissue, which can often be reversed when treated in a timely manner by a professional dentist. One of the most important things you can do to avoid having to undergo gum surgery is to take proper care of your teeth and gums. This simply requires you to gently brush your teeth at least twice a day and carefully floss your teeth at least once a day.

Gum disease

According to the American Dental Association, gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support the teeth and is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. When someone is diagnosed with a gum disease, seeking gum disease treatment as soon as possible is absolutely recommended, as it will only continue to worsen until treated by a dental professional.

Five tips to avoid periodontal surgery

The following is a list of five tips that everyone should follow, as they will help them avoid the need for periodontal surgery.

#1 – Get a dental cleaning

Regular dental cleanings are essential to good oral health! When a dental cleaning is performed, all of the plaque and tartar is carefully removed from the teeth. Clean teeth go hand in hand with healthy gums.

#2 – Use a quality mouthwash

Swishing the mouth with a quality mouthwash is a great way to help reduce any plaque buildup that can lead to a gum disease diagnosis. It will also kill any lingering bacteria in the mouth.

#3 – Stop smoking

Smoking puts one at a higher risk for gum disease, increasing their need for eventual periodontal surgery.

#4 – Eat nutritiously

Choosing to eat nutritious foods supports overall gum health.

#5 – Get a periodontist evaluation

Contacting an experienced dentist for a periodontist evaluation can allow someone to completely understand the current condition of their mouth, including whether or not any symptoms of early gum disease are present.
