The Purpose of Inlays and Outlays

Roderick A. Garcia DMD an Albuquerque Cosmetic and Family dentist has been serving his patients with outstanding dental care since 1983. Dr. Garcia is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston. Among the many dental procedures Dr. Garcia provides his patients, Inlays and Onlays are included.

Inlays and Onlays are lab fabricated restorations that replace a portion of a tooth, premolar or molar, due to decay a tooth fracture or both. Inlays replace tooth structure between the cusps and onlays replace one or more cusps. Inlays and onlays are made of either ceramic material or gold. Ceramic material is tooth colored and gold is of course gold colored. Once the decay and /or fractures are removed, the tooth is prepared specifically to allow for a passive placement of the inlay or onlay an impression of the tooth/teeth is made, a temporary inlay or onlay is temporarily cemented on the tooth/teeth and 10 to 14 days later the permanent inlay or onlay is cemented into place and the bite is adjusted.

The reason for an inlay over a filling, is inlay material is much harder than composite filling material and will generally last longer properly cared for. Onlays are an alternative to crowns in some situations and are more conservative since less tooth structure is removed. Gold inlays and onlays can last 40 to 50 years with proper dental care and maintenance.
