Three Signs You Might Need a Dental Implant Restoration

A dental implant restoration is almost as good as a natural tooth. Implants have emerged as one of the popular ways to replace missing teeth thanks to their bone-preserving benefits.

An implant is surgically placed into a person’s jaw, replacing the root of the lost tooth. The implant is given up to six months to fuse with bone tissues around it as it becomes part of the patient’s jaw. The oral prosthetic is then fitted with a restoration like a crown or dental bridge to replace any lost teeth. When the person bites down on something, bite forces are transferred into their jaw, keeping bone tissues there healthy.

Three reasons a dentist might recommend a dental implant restoration

Getting a dental implant restoration requires minor oral surgery, so patients should be healthy enough to go through that. People with diabetes or other health issues that weaken their immune system and make it harder to recover from surgery are evaluated individually to determine if implants are the right option for them.

Some of the signs a patient might need a dental implant restoration include:

1. Missing teeth

No surprise here; implants are explicitly designed to replace missing teeth, so anyone with missing teeth can benefit from getting them. Implants are the only missing teeth solution that replaces teeth roots, preserving the patient’s jawbone tissue.

Implants are also more convenient than other oral prosthetics for missing teeth since they do not require any special care. The same cannot be said about prosthetics like dentures, which need to be cleaned daily or soaked in denture cleaner. Brushing and flossing are all the maintenance that implants need.

2. Loose-fitting dentures

Dentures are the most economical way to replace missing teeth, but they come with a few drawbacks. For starters, dentures are held in place via suction, which leads to variable stability. These oral prosthetics often shift in the wearer’s mouth, irritating soft tissues and causing sores.

The lower stability of implants also makes it more challenging to eat and speak with these restorations. In some cases, dentures can even fall out of the wearer’s mouth when doing either of these things.

Implants can be used to anchor down dentures, so they are as stable as real teeth when worn. About four to six implants are inserted into each dental arch, and dentures are attached to them. Implant-supported dentures can be removable or permanently fixed in place.

3. Severely broken tooth

Dentists typically try to fix broken teeth with treatments like root canals or the placement of a crown, but these options are not always available. If a tooth is too damaged to be saved with any treatments, a dentist might recommend extracting the tooth and replacing it with an implant.
