What Is the All-on-4 Procedure?

Learning more about the benefits of All-on-4® dentures is the first step to take when considering choosing this denture option. There are a few different denture options available nowadays, which is great news as you get to decide which option is going to work ideally for you.  Since you are looking for more information on the All-on-4 procedure, it is likely you are interested in getting implant-supported dentures.

Why implant-supported dentures?

Wondering why the All-on-4 procedure is a popular denture option? The implants work with dentures to create implant-supported dentures, which means they're held securely in place by using strategically placed implants. A total of four implants need to be placed in the upper jaw and another four implants placed in the lower jaw for a full set of implant-supported dentures. Once this is done, the custom made dentures can then be attached to the implants, allowing for dentures that stay securely in place.

What is the All-on-4 procedure?

The information below contains the details on what people can expect when undergoing the All-on-4 procedure.

First appointment

During the first appointment, the patient will need to undergo an oral evaluation, a CT scan and X-rays. A dental professional will use the information from these procedures in order to create an All-on-4 treatment plan. Next, an impression of the patient's lower and upper jaw will be taken, which is used to make the dentures. It will take a few weeks for the custom made dentures to be completed.

Second appointment

The second appointment consists of the patient having the dental implants placed within their jawbone, which is a surgical process. The oral surgeon will decide where to place the implants so that they are able to offer the most support when connecting to the dentures. Two of the implants are placed near the front of the mouth, while the other two will be placed near the back of the mouth. Temporary teeth will be placed so that chewing can take place. Then, the patient should expect a recovery time of about four months.

Third appointment

Once the implants have fully healed, the third appointment is when the patient can start wearing their new custom made dentures. The temporary artificial teeth will be removed and the patient can start wearing their new dentures, which will be permanent. A full set of teeth makes for a healthy mouth and allows patients to easily perform their everyday activities, like eating, drinking and speaking.
