When to See a Dentist for Denture Repair

False teeth are one of the oldest and most traditional methods of tooth replacement, but if handled improperly or if an accident occurs, a denture repair may be needed. Dentures are prone to damage because they are delicate and accidents are unpredictable.

If you are thinking that your dentures are in need of attention, then it may be best to visit a dentist. The dentist can evaluate the state of the dentures and determine what type of repair is needed.

When to see a dentist for a denture repair

Thinking that your dentures need repairing? Read on to find out when to go see a dentist to start the repair process.

Cracked dentures

If dentures are dropped or handled too roughly, they may crack. A crack in a part of a denture results in the need for repair because cracks could cause cuts or irritation within the mouth. A crack may also release small particles of the nylon and plastic materials that compose the denture, which could pose a risk to one's entire mouth. A dentist can either repair the denture or start the replacement process, but either way, it is best to have them evaluate the crack first.

Stained dentures

Dentures are not immune from staining. Just like natural teeth, they can be prone to stains from heavily dyed beverages or foods. Over time, the teeth that are part of the dentures may yellow or stain. While staining is not detrimental, it could pose a threat to one’s appearance. A dentist can likely perform a denture repair or replacement for stained dentures.

Chipped dentures

While this prosthetic appliance is created in order to be a permanent fix, they are still quite fragile. If the dentures are dropped or roughly handled, they may chip. While a chip may not seem significant, if not repaired, over time, they could scrape the gums or the mouth. And the chip could worsen over time. A denture repair from a dentist is the best thing to do if dentures become chipped.

Uncomfortable fit

One indicator that a denture repair is needed would be if the dentures are not fitting comfortably. Over time, they may become loose or even tight, depending on the person’s mouth. If the dentures cause rubbing or irritation, then it is best to consult with a dentist about repairing them.

Dentures are meant to make life easier, so if they are causing pain or discomfort, then this means that they are not doing their job.
